Built from 15 years of managing expenses the hard way

PennySlice wasn't born in a brainstorm. It was born out of necessity, a large family, multiple households, and the stubborn belief that expense tracking shouldn't require this much work.

"I've used spreadsheet templates, countless tools, and every expense manager I could find, including Mint before it shut down. Every single one required hours of manual input and cleanup before the data told me anything useful. The few that automated things forced bank linking with no transparency about where my credentials went. And most of them sold my data to advertisers."

The road to PennySlice

From manual bank statements to AI-native expense intelligence.

The spreadsheet era

Managing expenses for two households across two countries, mine abroad and my family's back home. Bank statements printed, transactions copied by hand, categories maintained in spreadsheets. Hours of work before the data meant anything.

The tool-hopping years

Sheet templates, budgeting apps, expense trackers, I tried them all. Every one required the same thing: hours of manual cleanup before the numbers told a useful story. Some came close, but none could handle the complexity of managing multiple households.

The trade-off I had to make

The tools that did the most required the most — bank credentials handed to aggregation services with no transparency about what they did with the data. I made the trade-off for convenience, but even then the data still needed work. Meanwhile, most of these services quietly sold my spending data to advertisers. Convenience came at a cost I wasn't willing to keep paying.

The aha moment

Working in AI-native development, it clicked: what if AI wasn't bolted onto an expense tracker, what if it was the core of one? Deep integration, not surface automation. An AI that reads your transactions, understands context, categorizes accurately on the first try, and gets smarter from every user's corrections.

PennySlice is born

PennySlice was built with 15 years of hard-earned lessons and trained on 6 years of the founder's real expense data to be smart from day one. Every correction from every user teaches the system. Your bank credentials never leave your bank — whether you link via OAuth or import your own files. Not because privacy is a marketing angle, because it's the right way to build this.

Why this is different

Not another expense tracker with a chatbot bolted on. The AI is the product.

AI-first, not AI-added

Most expense trackers add AI as a feature. PennySlice was designed as a RAG system from day one, your data feeds the AI, and the AI makes your data meaningful on the first try.

Every user makes it smarter

When you correct a categorization, that correction improves the model for everyone. It's community-powered intelligence, the more people use PennySlice, the less work any single person has to do.

Your data, your choice

Link your bank for automatic updates via secure OAuth — your login stays with your bank and we never store it — or import your own exports. Either way: we never sell your data and we never show ads. This isn't a marketing angle, it's how the product works.

How PennySlice learns

A continuous feedback loop between your data, the intelligence engine, and the AI.

Where it's headed

PennySlice is still early. The AI is getting smarter every day. The vision is simple: an expense manager where you spend less time managing and more time understanding, where the AI handles the tedious work and surfaces the insights that actually matter. Built by someone who needed it, for everyone who's been looking for it.
